Kirubi is a self-made solar energy entrepreneur, a strategic thinker and a team builder. He brings over 15 years of deep passion and proven business acumen in creating and implementing innovative business models for delivering off-grid solar solutions and clean cookstoves to communities and micro-enterprises in East Africa.
In 2010, he founded SunTransfer Kenya Ltd, (STKE) an off-grid solar company that pioneered the testing and rolling out of PAYGO business model and last-mile distribution Solar Centers in Kenya. Between 2010 and 2014, STKE distributed over 50,000 solar lanterns through various MFIs. Over the past 3 years, STKE has installed over 5000 Solar Home Systems (SHS) of the 20W-100W range through our PAYGO platform. STKE currently boast of 73 full-time staff across 13 field branches (Solar Centers) delivering sales of Usd100-150k per month and over Usd $1million per year.
Earlier (2000-2004), Kiriubi was the Program Manager for the Renewable Energy Technology Assistance Programme (RETAP), a UNDP funded NGO, where he established and managed a US$1 million microfinance scheme to finance improved cookstoves for rural schools and SMEs in East Africa. Kirubi has also initiated and operated other businesses in Kenya, including Cyber café, and agri-business.
In 2001, he won the prestigious Ashden Award for his innovation and leadership in energy access for the BOP in Africa. In 2004, Kirubi won yet another prestigious e8 Sustainable Energy scholarship Award to study at the University of California, Berkeley, US, where he earned both an MSc and PhD in Energy Economics and Sustainable Development.
